The government recently announced a number of changes to how diesel will be taxed in Budget 2020.

With a red diesel ban being enforced from April 2022; red diesel will no longer be permitted in non-road mobile machinery including excavators, dumpers and cranes within the construction industry.

Businesses that are affected by these changes will no longer be eligible for the red diesel tax rate, meaning they should be prepared to make the switch to ‘white’ diesel that is taxed at the standard rate.

The objective behind this change is to offset the damage that fossil fuels have on the environment, and to encourage businesses to switch to more environmentally friendly fuel alternative.
